The remaining providers in our architecture will remain up, reducing impact.

Facebook Donations Tracker Updated

We've upgraded our Facebook app to the latest version with support for https views and the new login procedure (for those having trouble loging in). It's looking like Facebook has quietly dropped tabs from user profiles, leaving the only place to show application content on group pages. Long gone are the wall boxes of your profile which were taken away with a previous update.

Security updates

We've been busy rolling out some new updates including some security enhancements - no passwords are stored on our site or emailed to users. We are using a neat hashing system which includes a per-user salt and purposely introduced collisions to make recovering a password highly unlikely (you must now follow an email link to reset your password). With some recent media reports of other major websites having their databases hacked and leaked publicly, we decided that with a good chance a lot of our users re-use passwords for PayPal or email accounts, we should make reversing our hashes as difficult as possible - which is why we're only storing partial hashes making a brute force password guessing attack less successful. Combined with incremental timeouts for incorrect passwords, and 128 bit SSL encryption of logins, we think our secure account system is the standard all sites should strive to meet.

PayPal tracking issues with IPN

We've received a few reports over the weekend of the Profile based IPN setting overriding the transaction based IPN notify_url which is set automatically by DonationsTracker.com.

Normally the notify_url variable passed in a buy or donate button should override any profile set IPN url. If you are having issues with Donations not tracking - you can check the PayPal History section's IPN History to see the IPN URL used for past transactions, and to correct this issue - delete any Profile IPN setting and set the IPN to off to allow the transaction based one used by DonationsTracker to function.

Login issues

Twitter OAuth Support Added

The Donations Tracker twitter feed now supports OAuth which allows us to post donations updates to your twitter account without the need to provide your password to us. The previous api function has been discontinued by Twitter. To re-activate your twitter feed, log into DonationsTracker.com and find your twitter view, then click the Sign in with Twitter button to begin the process of authorizing the DonationsTracker.com Twitter application.

Automatic sizing for top and recent donations lists

We've made a few changes to enhance the Recent and Top donor views based on customer requests:

The title Recent Donors has been changed to Recent Donations.

User comments are now indented three spaces.

And the top and recent donors views will now automatically resize their height based on the number of donors displayed - if all donors are to be shown the list will grow to show all.

Facebook 2 - New users adding Donations Tracker

Here's a quick how to for once you've added the Donations Tracker Facebook application. Once you've selected the campaign to show, there's now a Add Profile Tab button. Click it.

That brings up a confirmation:

We've added a new feature to Donations Tracker - a webpage on DonationsTracker.com. You can pick any directory on Donations Tracker such as DonationsTracker.com/yourname/. When you add a new "view" to your campaign, select "Webpage on DonationsTracker.com/yourname/".

Check out our sample at http://www.donationstracker.com/sample/. You can add any HTML to the page you'd like and copy/paste one of the previously generated tracking images such as a thermometer etc. Included images should be available from somewhere on the internet.

We've added a new heavy duty server overnight at CrucialP's datacenter in Dallas, Texas, increasing our resources x 4 to handle the steady growth we're seeing in new DonationsTracker.com accounts on a daily basis. Our main IP address also changed as well, if you get a maintenance page instead of a login, you're seeing the old site and may need to flush your DNS cache. The move over had zero downtime and all images were continuously available as were the incoming donations. If you do notice any issues that could be related to the move please contact our support page or through this blog's comment capability.

Adding Donations Tracker to a Facebook page

Here's how to add a Donations Tracker box to a "page" on Facebook. To add to your profile you just need to click the Donations Tracker app login from Account - Application Settings .

Go to your Facebook Page, click the Edit Page link under the logo.

Then you get the edit page:

Upgrading to a PayPal business or premier account

Today's topic is PayPal account types, there are three - Personal, Premier and Business. We recommend that all of our users be Business or Premier - this will ensure that credit card donations are automatically accepted and paid into your account. The default personal account requires you to manually log in and approve each donation payment before it's credited into your account and then show up in the DonationsTracker.com campaign. (So if you received donations and your campaign is not showing the credit card ones - this is why). Personal accounts usually have a $500 limit before you must do the free upgrade to business or premier. While personal accounts can receive free PayPal transfers up to the first $500, a premier or business account is needed to regularly accept credit card donations or transfers totalling more than $500.

Pick list of multiple campaigns

We recently had a question from someone looking to have an advanced drop down list of campaigns to track separate totals, along with pre-filling out the donation amount, and asking if the donor wants to remain anonymous. The first option list uses the donation web address from the donation button generated on DonationsTracker.com. And this is all put on your own website (modified to look as needed), and the donor will be automatically clicked through to PayPal as all the options are pre-entered.

We've worked out the FaceBook auto-update images (they were caching the images instead of reloading as they changed). Every time there's a new donation (or when you save the campaign with or without changes) the Facebook image such as the thermometers etc will be reloaded by facebook. If you haven't received a donation lately and your Facebook image is out of date, just log into DonationsTracker.com, go to the campaign and click Save Campaign to update it.

Way to go to all our hard working fundraisers! We're working hard behind the scenes testing some new features in our Donation Tracker Labs. As always your suggestions are welcome! We've also introduced a subscription capability with monthly and annual rates, along with reminders for expiring accounts at 14, 2 and 0 days.

Here's a new tip - want to remove a donation from showing up? There is no delete button (just in case!), but you can make a donation not count by setting it's Payment Status to Failed or Refunded from the list of donors page in our campaign administration page.

Here's a hidden feature for you - you can pre-fill the donation amount and use a special item_name for the PayPal receipt - just add &amount=12.34 to the end of your link with the donation amount, and &item_name=Your+New+name for the item name, you can also make a pick list to select the donation amount or put a custom donation name to suit your needs.

Now when you add a view from one campaign to your FaceBook account, your campaign will be available for others to add.

Any Facebook user can add your campaign to their account in one of three ways:

Click the "Add campaign" link in the DonationsTracker when viewing the profile of someone who has your campaign added to their FaceBook profile.
Select the campaign from the list of campaigns in FaceBook at http://apps.facebook.com/donationstracker/
You can provide the URL for the "Add campaign" link in the DonationsTracker box to your followers to add the application and campaign in a single step. Just mouse-over the link in your profile boxes tab - it will look something like http://apps.facebook.com/donationstracker/add.php?fid=1

You can also put in a custom title (required) and a description box to say a little bit about your campaign.

Any users already with a donations tracker box in their profile - you'll want to log in through Facebook and re-select your campaign for these changes to take effect.

We've released some beta versions of some new campaign views. Now you can add an RSS Feed to your campaign, or a plain XML feed to feed a custom flash application etc.

We also have a PHP API available - using the PHP Serialize function you can access a text version of the donation totals from your own website's PHP code rather than the basic images.

A new list of donors view has been added as well, with a link to a special page on our site, you can allow your donors to view a list of donations and user comments customized to display the data you want.

With the busy holiday season upon us we've taken the opportunity to crank out a few great new features and update our site as our Christmas present to you!

By popular demand, we've added in the ability to edit a donation - you can make changes to any field such as the amounts, comment, username or address (just remember that if the transaction is updated later by PayPal - like by a refund etc, the changes will be overwritten by the PayPal values). Just click the "edit" link when viewing the list of donors from the Edit Campaign page.

Our newest feature is also possibly one of the most useful - the ability to enter a manual donation. Want to add those checks or cash or other "offline" donations to your campaign and have everything tracked - Add a manual donation from the "edit campaign" page. We're also working to make the donors list display a bit more usable, so if you have any requests to make it more useful, just let us know!

Tip of the day

Hello again,

Today we have a tip on making your thermometer or other graphical display fit to the image size. When you create a new thermometer or other view, don't forget to check that all the text fits - if you use the default size but use a very large fundraising goal, some of the digits in the goal won't fit. As a rule of thumb, add 12 points for every number that's cut off. So if you can't see the .00 cents, edit the view again and change the default width from 160 to 184.

Also - see that "DonationsTracker.com" text along the bottom of our images? You can change that to your own site or the name of the campaign - just fill in the Label box with your own text.

Raising the bar

Now that you've seen some of the donations tracking displays similar to our original PHP software package Stellar Donations Tracker we'd like to introduce some of the fancier things we can do on our hosted Donations Tracker service, one our neatest developments is bar graphs - something like a horizontal thermometer.

As with all of our fundraising campaign graphics at DonationsTracker.com the colors, currencies, goal and sizes are fully customizable. We automatically scale the image to whatever size you select and that label at the botom can display any text you want.

We're pretty excited about this, the smaller size of the bar graphs allows them to be placed all over your website, forum, blog, or anywhere you can add HTML. We do the processing on our site and host the automatically updating image - even monthly or annually resetting campaigns are supported.

The image is regenerated to constantly be up to date as you receive new donations. Donations are always processed securely by PayPal directly into your account, we do have any involvement in the financial transaction or have access to the financial information such as credit cards. We do use the PayPal IPN (Instant Payment Notification) feature to record the donation for tracking purposes.

Banners galore

We've released a few more "views" this week. Views are what we call an image that represents your donation campaign with useful information like the current totals, target goal, and number of donors.

Our latest undertaking is a banner that can be added to any page that displays the number of donors. For larger campaigns where you don't want to advertise the specifics of your exact income, a number of donors listing can help provide that instant feedback to donors without releasing too much financial info.

Rememeber that every campaign can have an multiple "views" showing different data and using different colors or sizes anywhere on the internet. Mix and match that thermometer with a banner and so on.

The banner will scale to any size - when your number of donors is too big to fit, the font will drop down until the number still fits withing the image size you've chosen. Don't forget you can enter your own donors color, text color, and background as well.

We have officially launched our Donations Tracking service for PayPal at http://www.donationstracker.com/. After several months of hard work we've adapted our Stellar Web Solutions Donations Tracker for PayPal to a service based model, relieving users of the need to install a database and insert PHP code into their website. The new site initially offers a graphical thermometer representations of donations towards a specific goal. We also plan to offer additional views such as a bar graph, banner, and lists of recent or top donors.
